From Cecile Licad’s rccital we hear the two
Impromptus which make up Scriabin’s Opus 12.
Scriabin’s mothcr, Lyubov Shchetinina, was one of the
first important female Russian pianists, who had studied
with thc influential teachcr Theodor Leschetitzky
and knew Anton Rubinstein and Tchaikowsky. But
she died less than a year after his birth. His father
was often absent working as an interpreter for the
Russian Embassy in Constantinople, and later as a
Consul in other countries. Alexander was raised by
his two grandmothers and his aunt, herself an amateur
musician. His talent showed very early, and he
entered the Moscow Conservatory in 1888 without
needing to take the entrance examination because
the director, Vasili Safonov, had been so impressed
when he heard him play. He received the Gold Medal
for Safonov’s piano class, but never achieved the
diploma for composition, which he studied with
Taneyev and Arensky. lt was reported that he had
some disagreements with Arensky, who may havc
had feelings of jealousy. He mainly performed his
own music in his recitals, and so his career as a
virtuoso was never significant.
