The Husum Festival 2001 ©
Many music festivals attract large audiences with programmes of popular works played by famous musicians. Husum has always dared to be different. From its beginning in 1987 it has sought out the unknown works and musicians who are willing to learn repertoire for the occasion. These rarities cannot always be masterpieces, but the faithful audiences continue to support the concerts and are rewarded by performances of a high standard. This is why the CD series provokes comments both complimentary and critical: these selections from the eight concerts are for adventurous listeners and not for those wishing to compare performances of another standard work. Some familiar names are here, but in transcriptions or in the composers’ lesser-known pieces. For the open-minded there should be plenty of stimulating surprises, and material which provokes thought rather than anything too comfortable.
