The ideal concerl programme is varied, entertaining and not tiring for the audience, and features the most popular works of the best known composers. This formula guarantees success for any concert promoter, and indeed one of Europe’s largest summer festivals, that of Schleswig-Holstein, has been adopting it with spectacular results for years.
What could therefore justify changing it and opting for its complete opposite? Well, the idyllic northen German town of Husum tried just that in 1987 with a
week of piano recitals in which the ideal of variation and entertainment was maintained, but dispensing with the firm favourites that normally guarantee box office income.
The festival was the brainchild of pianist Peter Froundjian whose aim was to show audiences that works by lesser-known composers, or lesser-known works by familiar composers could happily make for a successful concert.
