Christian Frederik Emil Horneman (1840-1906) was the son of the composer, pianist and music publisher Johan Ole Emil Horneman, and the young
Horneman decided to follow in his father’s musical footsteps. He began to write music as a child, and in 1858-60 he studied at the conservatoire in Leipzig. While there he came to know Edvard Grieg and other students at what was the most creatively progressive conservatoire of the day. Having returned to Denmark, Horneman founded the kinds of musical organisation already established elsewhere in Europe, such as the ‘Euterpe’ music society, and a
conservatoire of his own.
His own compositional output focused on art-song, but he also wrote string quartets and incidental music: notably, in 1889, the score to accompany Holger Drachmann’s Gurre, which took on a life of its own as an orchestral suite, performed by Grøndahl and the DRSO in 1926 and on several occasions thereafter. However, it was Aladdin that came to define his life’s work. Not long after his return from Leipzig, he decided to write an opera based on the famous tale from One Thousand and One Nights . He came into contact with the Danish writer Benjamin Feddersen (who was one of Grieg’s friends), and ideas for the opera began to take shape. He composed an overture in 1864, and conducted its premiere two years later.
