The Cello ©
In all three concertos, Bengtsson plays a modern instrument, made in 1935 by the
Copenhagen-based J. N. Frost.
Today the cello resides in that cityâs Royal Academy of Music and is lent to gifted students.
Bengtsson likes to recall Nikolai Malko (1883-1961), who conducts the Barber here,
and who was closely associated with Danish musical life. Malko was something of a magician
and after the concert there was a party at the cellistâs house where Malko âentertained with all
sorts of card tricks.â
