Of his experience of Langgaard’s music Bengt Johnsson has written:
I first heard a Langgaard work in 1943, the ninth symphony, “Queen Dagmar”; and in 1950 I became
acquainted with the fourth, ” Leaf-fall” . Langgaard appeared to me to be one of the greatest of Danish
composers, and I could not comprehend why he was relegated to the second rank after Carl Nielsen. I wrote
as much in the Danish Journal of Music in 1952, something which caused something of an uproar in academic
circles. Mrs. Constance Langgaard wrote to me, having read the article, and this led to many conversations
about her husband’s music. During 1955 I gave the first performance of many of his piano works on
the Danish State Radio, amongs them the “Fantasia of Rage” which Mrs. Langgaard dedicated to me.
