Songs to our Lady ©
The lyrics to the Latin Hail Mary prayer are used in five of the works on this CD (tracks [ 1 ], [ 3 ], [12], [13] and [17]). In addition, parts of the prayer may
be recognized in tracks [11] and [14]. The prayer is divided into two parts (cf. the English translation of the lyrics):
Part one: Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, benedicta tu in mulieribus et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus is taken from the Gospel of St. Luke ch. 1, in which the Angel Gabriel greets Mary and tells her that she is to give birth to Jesus.
Part two: Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen was added in the 13th century, and the prayer as a
whole still constitutes an important part of the Catholic Rosary, which also includes the Apostlesâ Creed and the Our Father. The Hail Mary prayer was prayed in Ribe Cathedral as in all other churches for centuries, but with the Reformation and the Protestant Church it disappeared. Remaining is Virgin Mary, Our Lady, as the Mother of Jesus and a Faith Heroine as Kierkegaard calls her, who gave her life and body so that the Word might become flesh when she said, âBehold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.â
