Chopin’s succes as a performer and composer opened up the professional door for him to Westeren Europe, and on November 2, 1830, Chopin set out into the wide world, with no very clearly defined aim – and then not knowing that he never again would return to his native country.
In 1836 Chopin met French author and feminist Aurore Dudevant, better known by her pseudonym George Sand, and by the summer of 1838, Chopin’s and Sand’s involvement was an open secret. The couple spent several summers at Sand’s estate at Nohant near Chateauroux.
During these periods, particularly in the years 1839-1843, Chopin found quiet but productive months, where he was able to compose many of his works.
