Johan Adam Krygell ©
Johan Adam Krygell (1835-1915) was an organist and a composer all through his adult life. He was employed at two churches, first the parish church of Herlufsholm, situated in the same area as that of the
Herlufsholm Boarding School, and subsequently at Matthæuskirken (the Church of St Matthew) in Vesterbro, Copenhagen. In his early twenties he composed waltzes and marches in the youthful style of H. C. Lumbye for the local orchestra in Næstved and, at an advanced age, during the last decade before his death, he composed superior string quartets in all keys.
Johan Adam Krygell wrote abnut 150 compositions, covering a broad range of genres, from spiritual songs to symphonies. About half of Krygell’s output is secular music: ten orchestral overtures, four symphonies, twentyfive string quartets and an opera. The other half is church music and here, among other things, we find his mass in C sharp minor for soloists, choir and orchestra, a requiem,
spiritual songs for choir, works for one solo part and organ, and. first and foremost, organ music!
