Emil Hartmann: Piano Works ©
Emil Hartmann was a very industrious man, who spent most of the day at his desk, so it is no wonder that he has
left behind many compositions including symphonies, concertos, operas, chamber music and songs wherefrom
most of the manuscripts are conserved in the Royal Danish Library. His works are mainly published by
German publishers, whom obtained this music in a period which had been played much abroad, especially in
Germany, but also some at home. Likewise, he made many trips to Germany, where he conducted his own works.
Emil Hartmann played the piano himself, very vividly and he knew how to get the piano to sound and sing. He
often included old tunes in his improvisations on the piano, often Bellman’s songs, which he intertwined, for
which this ability for beautiful melodic lines and theme transitions which also show in his written piano works.
