At the age of 16, Bengtsson was accepted as a pupil at the renowned Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. There he studied with the distinguished Russian cellist Gregor Piatigorsky (1903-76). Bengtsson made quite an impression on Piatigorsky (who played with such legendary musicians as violinist Jascha Heifetz and pianist Artur Rubinstein, known colloquially as the “million dollar trio”) – enough for the master to invite his pupil to be his assistant (Bengtsson also taught at Curtis) and for him to later cite Bengtsson as a role model for his subsequent students. It’s a nice touch that this release includes a Waltz by Prokofiev arranged for cello by Piatigorsky. Another of Bengtsson’s musical experiences was to play in the ranks of the Casals Orchestra with Pablo Casals himself conducting.
Bengtsson is noted for his infallible memory and his impressive technical facility. Also that he is not a pedant to giving ‘authentic’ performances – not least the Suites of J. S. Bach – preferring to focus on the music itself and what it means to us today, rather than speculating on how it might have sounded at the time of its composition and in the earliest performances. After all, this is music that never goes out of fashion and is adaptable to all sorts of recreation.

This current second release embracing Danish Radio recordings of Bengtsson includes a mix of established repertoire (by Shostakovich and Richard Strauss), music by modern masters Luciano Berio and György Ligeti, together with a couple of pieces that are probably less familiar, by Sven-Erik Bäck and the afore mentioned Bentzon, both composers dedicating their concertos to Bengtsson.
