Victor Bendix ©
The Danish composer, pianist, and conductor, Victor Emanuel Bendix (1851-1926), was a key figure in Danish music. He composed more than 100 works and performed as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor for over half a century. As an artist he was highly respected and as a teacher he was highly sought after as no-one in Copenhagen mastered music like he did.
Simultaneously he was also a controversial character who, despite his talents and abilities, was met with great scepticism. Bendix stood out, partly because he did not conform to the very conservative musical standards that dominated Copenhagen in the late 19th century, partly because he was Jewish and partly because as a freethinker, he was a liberal. At the same time there were rumours about his private life and numerous love affairs, some of which became quite scandalous.
