During the 1930’s, Langgaard’s darkest, most difficult period, only very few works were to see the light of day: there were no more than nine first performances in the whole decade, with the organ work ‘ ‘Messis” (BVN 228) the most characteristic.
Instead the earlier symphonies and a number of orchestral and choral pieces were revised; in some of the symphonics large cuts were made in the hope
that the shorter, tauter versions would be more likely to appeal to programmers at concert societies and the broadcasting system.
In 1937, for instance, Langgaard submitted the second movement of this symphony to the state radio under the title “Distant Days”, but in vain.
This quick, cheerful movement had been composed in 1926 as part of the incidental music to the play “A Poet’s Dream” (BVN 181 ), and was only incorporated in the symphony in 1928.
