Danmarks Radio and the “Rued Langgaard renaissance” ©
During the 1950s, after Langgaard had died and Launy Grøndahl had retired, Langgaard’s music disappeared from the radio programmes. The oldest recordings preserved in DR’s archive are Drapa with Grøndahl from 1957 (CD2) and Hvidbjerg-Drapa with Ernst Hye- Knudsen from 1958 (CD2). Both are of special interest because Grøndahl performed Drapa six times with the symphony orchestra during the composer’s lifetime, and Hvidbjerg- Drapa had been premiered with the same cast in 1950, two years before Langgaard’s death. These are therefore historical recordings with authenticity. As an isolated occurrence, DR produced Symphony no. 6 in 1961 with Martellius Lundquist (CD1). But the situation changed in the mid-1960s. Prompted by the renewed, international interest in Mahler and Bruckner, DR realized that they should probably take a closer look at the completely neglected Danish ‘late romantic’ composer Langgaard. His widow, Constance, who lived until 1969, constantly pushed for her husband’s rehabilitation.
