John Frandsen
John Hakon Frandsen was born out of wedlock in Copenhagen on July 10, 1918, to Edith Frandsen (1898-1978). His father, Hakon Thomsen, was a somewhat older businessman who emigrated to the United States shortly afterwards, and whom Frandsen never met.
As a boy, Frandsen grew up with his mother in Denmark, and while classical music did not play a significant role in his early upbringing he seems to have inherited musical talents from his mother’s side of the family. She sang in a Copenhagen church and her brother was a percussionist in the orchestra of the Royal Life Guards. Her brother’s son – Frandsen’s cousin – was Poul Lerhøj, a percussionist and timpanist for the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra (DRSO), where he later played numerous concerts under Frandsen’s baton.

As a musician Frandsen was essentially a romantic. He was guided by musical instinct and feeling rather than by objective, intellectual analysis, and like Wilhelm Furtwängler, whom he knew and greatly admired, he communicated his intentions to the orchestra by means of sheer charisma as much as the mechanics of gesture. He was no consistent performer; his performances of a given piece could vary greatly from one day to another, depending on his mood and level of inspiration, which inevitably led to a variable quality of performance. Generally, his interpretations were characterized by affectionate phrasing, a warm, rich sonority and, especially in his later years, unhurried tempi.
Frandsen’s romantic outlook did not, however, prevent him from being an excellent Mozartian and an idiomatic interpreter of the sound and unsentimental music of Carl Nielsen. Nor did he turn his back on the music of his more modern contemporaries.
