Since I was a really, really young student with Anne Ćland, I have heard about Herman D. Koppel’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Anne Ćland played it herself and, in addition to that, was a student of Herman D. Koppel. She always referred to the concerto as a masterpiece, devilishly difficult, impossible to learn by heart, and I was filled with awe and curiosity.
Some years ago, the old thought of one day playing the concerto took shape, and I found a recording featuring Herman D. Koppel himself and got a copy of the music from DR’s music archive. I fell in love with the music at once, capured by the simple jazzy theme in the 1st movement, and the 3rd movement’s devilish mirth – that was it! Like passing a huge mountainscape by train – fast, intense, massive, beautiful, impressive. SO full of everything – Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Beethoven, Respighi, Carl Nielsen, and, most of all, really Herman D. Koppel himself. SO Danish/Nordic in it’s expression and yet extremely international.
