The Cello ©
The Cello or violincello as it is properly called, is the tenor-baritone of the orchestra and string quartet.
Its warm, sonorous, and yet virile romantic voice has made it a favoured melody-bearing instrument in the orchestra and string quartet, and an admired solo instrument aswell. Unfortunately for would-be cello soloists, however, the concerto repertoire is limited. No major composer after Haydn and Bocchelini conceived of the instrument as a concerto soloist until Schumann wrote his A minor concerto in about 1850, and even after that nothing of substance appeared until Dvorak composed his masterly B minor concerto in the mid-1890’s.
