Leif Kayser was born in 1919. By the time he was twenty, his first two symphonies had already been premiered in Sweden. Their liveliness and warmth, coupled with structural assurance, attracted much attention. Leif Kayser received his music training at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Further studies with Tor Mann (conducting), Hilding Rosenberg (composition), and with Nadia Boulanger followed. His whole life he was a much sought and admired teacher of instrumentation at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. His prolific output includes works in almost every genre with the exception of opera and ballet: from unaccompanied songs and canons to large choral works for various numbers of voices, vocal music with instrumental accompaniment spanning from solo songs to major works like his Christmas Oratorio and Te Deum. Correspondingly, there are works for various solo instruments, among them many and significant organ works. His chamber music includes duets for recorders, string quartet, brass quartet and many other constellations. And then there is the long series of orchestral works, mostly for symphony orchestra, but also for other ensembles, such as chamber orchestra, string orchestra, school orchestra, brass band, and so on.
