Niels W. Gade ©
In his day Niels Wilhelm Gade was regarded at home and abroad as Denmark’s greatest composer. He was the only child of an instrument maker, Soren Nielsen Gade, who moved to Copenhagen from Jutland; his interest in the stringed instruments in his father’s workshop quickly made it clear that music would be his career. He learned the violin and began to study with Det Kongelige Kapel (The Royal Danish
Orchestra). A. P Berggreen taught him theory and composition; this composer’s interest in the Danish popular ballad had a considerable influence on young Gade.
