Georges Bizet ©
Georges Bizet may be considered an unlucky man, and also an unlucky composer. As for anyone who dies young, that is tragedy enough, and heavy smoker Bizet was but thirty-six when a second heart attack claimed him, and he also passed away believing that his opera Carmen was a failure; of course it has gone on to become one of the most popular and enduring of stage-works.
Born in Paris in 1838, the composer-to-be was registered as Alexandre CĂ©sar LĂ©opold Bizet if christened as Georges. His father, Adolphe, was a hairdresser and a wigmaker who went on to be a singing teacher; and Georgesâs mother, AimĂ©e (nĂ©e Delsartes) was a skilled pianist. Musically precocious, Georges, aided by his parentsâ occupations, took a keen interest in the music heheard in the house and he was also able to prove himself adept enough to enter the Paris Conservatoire shortly before his tenth birthday, for which the Conservatoireâs rules were broken to allowsuch an early admission.
