Biographical sketch ©
It is very likely, that in the 1650’s Buxtehude sought instruction from the most important organist in Copenhagen, Johan
Lorentz (1609 – 89), who since 1635 had occupied the organ bench of the Church of St. Nicholas, where he gained a reputation as one of the most esteemed organists of the time. The organ of this church, which was destroyed in the great fire of Copenhagen in 1795, was among the capital city’s biggest and best, 40 stops divided between 3 manuals and pedal, and had been built by Lorentz’ father, Johan Lorentz (d. 1650), who had received the royal privilege as organ builder in Denmark and Norway from Christian lV in 1639.
