The Lyrical Piano Composition in Denmark © Henning Bro Rasmussen
In a lyrical composition for piano, individual movements will typically be structured on the simple, classical principle of ABA, producing, in other words, a tripartite structure whose last section is experienced as a return to the first.
The lyrical piano composition was to become one the most popular genres of the Romantic period, cultivated not only by Schubert, Chopin and Schumann, but also by Liszt, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Brahms, as well as numerous Central European composers. Indeed there was hardly a composer capable of wielding a music pen that did not display his genius within the genre. The lyrical piece was much in demand with pianists in every household, high as low, that possessed a piano. The genre survived until well after the onset of early twentieth-century rationality. On the present release you will find a selection of Danish composers attempts within this popular genre.
