Waltzes op. 39 ©
Johannes Brahms composed his sixteen Waltzes op. 39 in 1865. They were published in 1866, with a dedication to the music critic Dr. Eduard Hanslick, a
close personal friend of Brahms. The waltzes were an instant success, and have remained a favourite of the four- hand piano repertoire to this day. At the
time of their composition, Brahms was residing in Vienna, and the waltzes are infused with the unmistakable Viennese elegance of this dance form.
Brahms had also recently worked on organising Schuberts Ländler and other dance form compositions, and there is a recurring sense of Schubertian melody and harmonic changes throughout the waltzes.
