The Music for Two Pianos by Mario Tarenghi ©
The Italian composer and pianist Mario Tarenghi (1870 – 1938) is part of the great romantic music tradition of Lombardy, where the piano occupies a favoured place. At first glance, his piano production would seem to be characterised by collections consisting of short pieces with a strong melodic vein and a deliberately morose virtuosity intended for domestic use, sometimes almost pedagogical, rather than for large concert halls; for this reason, the few piano scores reissued in the present day are only included in a few anthologies for beginner pianists.
Despite the publishing success of his music during his lifetime, Mario Tarenghi is still a little-known figure on the Italian and international music scene and, a hundred years later, even recordings of his music are still virtually non-existent. The Dizionario dei Musicisti published in 1918 by Alberto de Angelis is one of the few documents that reveal biographical data on the composer:
“born in Bergamo on 10 July 1870, he studied at the conservatory in that city […] then at the conservatory in Milan (M. Fumagalli, Saladino and A. Catalani), where he graduated in piano and composition. As his final recital, he had a Symphony in 4 movements performed by a large orchestra. He won the Bonetti prize with a one-act opera Marcella (1901) performed at the theatre in Bergamo. Five years later, he had […] another of his operas Gara antica performed, achieving the greatest success in both theatres. […] He published over 600 chamber compositions for piano, two and four hands, for two pianos, for choir, for singing and for instruments. Many of them are often performed in public concerts. His Stabat Mater was recently successfully performed in Milan, under the baton of Tullio Serafin. […] Tarenghi directs the Milan Music School, where he has been professor of piano and composition for many years”. On 21 September 1938 Tarenghi died in Milan.
If his music for solo piano is repertoire still little frequented by pianists, his compositions for two pianos are an even more unexplored treasure. It is interesting to note that among the few performers of these pages are the duo composed of Berta da Nóbrega, Artur Pizarro’s grandmother, and the pedagogue Campos Coelho, who interpreted the refined variations on Schumann’s theme on numerous occasions.
