Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832) ©

The two main figures in Danish music at the beginning of the 19th century were Friedrich Kuhlau and Christoph Ernst Friedrich Weyse. Kuhlau was the one with the internationalo utlook. He played an important paft in introducing the music of Ludwig van Beethoven to the somewhat conservative musical scene in Copenhagen. In his five operas one hears the influence of two other great composers of the time: Gioacchino Rossini and Carl Maria von Weber.
Kuhlau’s opus consists of operas, musical dramas, chamber music, music for the flute, and – first and foremost – a considerable number of works for his own instrument, the piano. Kuhlau composed an extensive series of piano sonatas and variations planned on an ambitious scale, and fully up to the virtuoso taste of the age, but his piano music has become almost synonymous with his piano sonatinas- easy-to-play piano pieces, commissioned by contemporary international music publishers and often used for instructional purposes
