Carl Nielsen recordings ©
It is fair to say that Carl Nielsen was not a well-known name in the UK during the first half of the last century. Sporadic performances
of his works did not produce a breakthrough in wider popularity such as was enjoyed, above all, by his Finnish colleague Sibelius.
The turning point in his reputation – perhaps not only in the UK, but more generally outside Denmark – took place at the Edinburgh
International Festival in August 1950, when the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra gave an incandescent account of the Fifth Symphony
under the baton of Erik Tuxen. Record labels and broadcasters – notably the BBC – capitalised on this success, and in turn made Nielsen’s
music much more widely known. Tuxen and the DRSO had recorded the Fifth in April 1950, for the Danish arm of HMV. This, in
turn, became a sought-after set of records (being issued, in those days, on 78s).
