Christian Gheorg Pavel Augustovic Pabst (1854-1897) achieved less fame than his illustrious colleagues Tausig, Thalberg, Gottschalk, Kalkbrenner, Friedman, d’Albert et al., it was not through
any lack of technical accomplishment, but because he chose the life of teacher rather than that of a full-time touring concert pianist. After studies with his father and subsequently in Vienna with A. Door, he was invited to the Moscow Conservatoire where he was revered as both performer and teacher (his pupils include Igumnow, Goldenweiser, Konius and Liapunov).
Renowned for his interpretations of Liszt and Schumann (Clara Wieck is said to have written that she knew no-one who played her husband’s work better), Pabst was also asked by the young Rachmaninov to join him in the first performance of his Fantasietableaux for two pianos Op. 5. He made numerous transcriptions, mostly of works by his compatriot Tchaikovsky, including the celebrated” Concert Parapharase on Themes from Eugene Onegin” , an opera whose first performance he attended in a production given by students of the Moscow Conservatoire in March 1879.
